May 15, 2015 | Ode to Jackeen at The Firehouse Space
Jonah Rosenberg has been working with ESM for a number of years on this project, which now incorporates actors and video. Genre-wise, Jonah refers to it as an "electroacoustic chamber opera," and the work incorporates original (spoken) text and sets (sung) text from Kenneth Patchen's Journal of Albion Moonlight. Drake Andersen's INDRA system accompanied the ensemble premiere of Spring flow with ESM violist Kallie Ciechomski as soloist. Plus world premieres of Lewis Nielson's El descanso del guerrero (written for ESM, with Nick DeMaison conducting) and Turkar Gasimzada's 9 Rubais for flute and guitar duo. Program here

Jonah Rosenberg's evolving work Ode to Jackeen, based on text from proto-beat author Kenneth Patchen's groundbreaking non-linear novel "The Journal of Albion Mooonlight" (listen to the premiere here). Plus Bowie's “Subterraneans” (arr. Drake Andersen) and Philip Glass's Music in Similar Motion.

This Brooklyn venue hosts many an indie band on their small stage in the back of the bar, and for this program ESM presented Jonah Rosenberg's ARRAYS for alto flute and tape (written for Martha), Piazzolla's Oblivion, Haller's fractal.2, a rap cantata by Doug Balliett, and Tom Johnson's irreverent Naryana's Cows.

This exquisite contemporary Chinese art gallery in Chelsea hosted us for a concert featuring Saariaho's Adjö, Rzewski's irreverent Les moutons de panurge, the US premiere of Yangzhi Ma's solo flute work Morningside/Riverside, Robert Sirota's Canzona for solo guitar, a viola solo by Philippe Hersant, and Milton Babbitt's A Waltzer in the House for soprano and vibraphone, among other works. We performed the second half (Assad and Rzewski) on the terrace behind the gallery.

Curated by cellist Eric Cooper, this program featured Sergio Assad's addictive Winter Impressions (flute, viola, guitar), Kaija Saariaho's hypnotic Adjö (flute/piccolo, guitar, voice), the world premiere of Robert Sirota's Canzona for solo guitar, John Cage's Wonderful widow of 18 Springs (Charlotte with Jordan knocking on his guitar), Kyle Werner's Moot for solo percussion, and a semi-improvised ensemble work by Mike Perdue.
